Long time Center members may remember another time that this young man packed his bags for a trip to Jacob’s World. For those who don’t remember the story of Jacob’s world check out the link. Amy Smith shares her own wonder at the progress her son has made over the years. Independence doesn’t happen over night, but with the right supports it can be realized.
“Today Jacob heads to Camp for the week. What a difference as the years have gone by. I used to have to take the day before drop off to get him and his brother Zack packed and ready and go pick up whatever I forgot. This year makes the 7th or 8th year Jacob will be going to Camp. I reminded him to make sure his clothes were cleaned yesterday. He packed himself last night after I went to bed. Double check this morning but that’s it.
I know we all work towards getting our kids, especially those with challenges, ready for taking care of themselves. I think this qualifies as a success. No anxiety, no drama, no meltdowns. It is a success, just weird. What is weirder is I am sitting here drinking coffee with his brother.”
